The New York Giants have made several notable changes to the coaching staff after an underwhelming 2025 season. While the Giants fired coach Brian Daboll midseason last year, they backed general manager Joe Schoen to remain in his role.

However, according to the latest reports, Schoen’s role has been diminished, as he has “been relegated to handling scouting.” Dawn Aponte, who was hired as their senior vice president of football operations and strategy last week, is reportedly overseeing the major functions under coach John Harbaugh.

NFL fans reacted to Schoen’s reported demotion by the Giants.

“They carving his way out the door.”

“Lucky he has a job.”

“I do not understand why he is still there. Does he have a clause in his contract that if he is fired it’s a major settlement? Why not just part ways at this point?”

According to The Athletic’s Ian O’Connor, Harbaugh was “heavily involved” in Aponte’s hiring, who will oversee analytics, salary cap management and player contract negotiations.

Giants HC John Harbaugh praised Joe Schoen after his arrival in New York

The reports of Joe Schoen’s demotion come after new coach John Harbaugh praised the Giants manager for his judgment last week, per The Athletic.

“I had high expectations for Joe, and I would say he’s lived up to those high expectations,” Harbaugh said. “We’ve worked really well together. We talk multiple, multiple times every day … and a lot of things come up.

“‘We hired an analyst, so what are we paying him? What did the Raiders or Eagles say when we asked for permission to speak to someone?’ Joe’s been a smart judge of tactics and situations.”

Giants fans hope Schoen and Harbaugh’s partnership could help the Giants bounceback next season after a poor 2005.
