Deebo Samuel was traded to the Washington Commanders in March after six years with San Francisco. The wide receiver will hit free agency this offseason and there has been speculation about him returning to the 49ers.
San Francisco insider Matt Maiocco gave an update on the 2021 Pro Bowler’s future on Saturday.
Thanks for the submission!
“So I don’t think that anything has changed in a year where both sides are just like, ‘Oh my gosh we just can’t survive without each other. Let’s bring him back.’ So let’s just say I wouldn’t expect Jennings to be back with the 49ers. I wouldn’t expect Deebo Samuel to come back to the 49ers,” Maiocco tweeted.

Samuel is coming off a solid season, posting 72 catches, 727 yards, five touchdowns and one rushing score in 15 games.
Brandon Aiyuk’s drama with the 49ers started with a contract dispute. He signed a four-year, $120 million extension in August 2024 following a hold-in and trade request. However, Aiyuk suffered a torn ACL, MCL and meniscus in Week 7 that year, landing him on the PUP list.
He missed rehab sessions, team meetings and stopped communicating with staff during his recovery. San Francisco voided his $24.9 million option bonus and all 2026 guarantees for breach of contract.

Christian McCaffrey on Deebo Samuel’s potential return to San Francisco
The San Francisco 49ers parted ways with Pro Bowl wideout Deebo Samuel after he pushed for a trade to the Washington Commanders in March. However, Christian McCaffrey is interested in reuniting with his former teammate.
The star running back shared his stance on Samuel’s potential return.
“Deebo is one of my favorite guys that I have ever played with,” McCaffrey said on Feb. 6, via the “Up & Adams” show. ” “We all love Deebo. Our whole staff loves Deebo. All of the players on the team love Deebo. There is no question he would be welcomed back.”
The 49ers could benefit from bringing Samuel back, especially with uncertainty about the futures of Brandon Aiyuk and Jauan Jennings.
