Cross season 2 shifts away from the straight-up murder mystery of season 1. The latest villain is a vigilante who may kill for personal reasons, though her methods result in equally deadly consequences.
Sportskeeda spoke to the Cross season 2 cast to discuss the complexity of the latest villain, Luce. The first three episodes of season 2 are currently streaming on Prime Video.
Isaiah Mustafa, who plays Detective John Sampson, Cross’ best friend and partner in the force, had a new take:
“As a fan, I like things like that because it makes me question where my loyalties lie. It’s the question of is someone doing the wrong thing for the right reason? I think that’s what the audience is going to have to come to grips with. But they’re going to watch an amazing story as they do this. As a fan I love that approach.”
Samantha Walkes, who plays Elle, has a complex relationship with Alex Cross in Cross season 2. She cannot come to forgive him for his actions in the past season, but is still very much a part of his life. Walkes added the following:
“Agreed. I think it’s thrilling to watch. I think we as a people, as a society are fascinated by what’s under the bed, what’s in the dark, what’s in the closet. I think it keeps us curious. Draws us in. And I love watching things that ask something of me as a viewer.”
When viewers get a glimpse into Luce’s past and the reasons behind her crimes, they sympathize with her, despite the fact that she’s the show’s villain. Walkes continued:
“So this demands me to answer the question – what is a monster? How is it made? Is it made? And am I part of that machine? Like all of those things are so fun as an audience member.”
Cross season 2 presents Luce as the antithesis to Ed Ramsey in season 1
Ed Ramsey is the villain who comes in the crosshairs of Alex Cross in season 1. When asked to compare Luce from Cross season 2 with him, Mustafa replied:
“There is no comparison. You cannot compare Ramsey and Luce. Ramsey had a specific thing that he wanted to do, and he was going to do that and he was doing that until Alex Cross came along.”
That said, Walkes pointed out that there was still a similarity between both vicious characters:
“I think the only thread that could be pulled from both is their intense dedication to like precision. Like they are so laser focused on their goal. They are so driven. I think that’s the only thread that like binds them as these ‘monsters’ that we are investigating. If they are monsters. You know, they are so driven and they really believe there is righteousness in their journey, you know?”
