Peter Sayle, 32, pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the fifth day of his trial at Preston Crown Court. Prosecutors accepted the plea as an alternative to the murder charge he originally faced.

The Incident

Sayle lost his temper when his six-week-old son, Huxley, refused to settle. Paramedics rushed to the family’s home in Squires Wood, Fulwood, after reports that the baby had stopped breathing. Huxley arrived at Royal Preston Hospital, where scans revealed a severe head injury. Doctors transferred him to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital in the early hours of June 14, 2022. Despite intensive care, his injuries proved fatal, and life support ended on July 14, 2022.

Medical Findings

CT scans conducted on June 22, 2022, showed multiple skull fractures and brain injuries consistent with violent shaking. A Home Office post-mortem confirmed traumatic head injury as the cause of death, ruling out natural causes. Dr. Alison Armour noted two rib fractures incompatible with CPR; these likely resulted from forceful gripping or squeezing around the chest during shaking.

Police Investigation

Authorities arrested Sayle on June 17, 2022, at his Fulwood home on suspicion of Section 18 wounding. He denied involvement, attributing injuries to CPR efforts. Mounting evidence led to a second arrest for murder, which he also denied. In his final interview on March 27, 2025, Sayle rejected claims of shaking Huxley and insisted he caused no harm.

Disturbing Phone Searches

Analysis of Sayle’s mobile phone uncovered searches shortly after Huxley’s birth, including “tips to deal with frustration and anger,” “baby crying makes me angry dad,” and “I’m getting so angry when baby won’t sleep.”

Sentencing Ahead

Currently of no fixed address, Sayle awaits sentencing on Thursday, February 12, at Preston Crown Court.

DCI Andy Fallows of Lancashire Police’s Force Major Investigation Team stated: “I welcome today’s manslaughter plea put forward by Peter Sayle. After three and a half years of denials he has finally admitted that he is responsible for assaulting and causing baby Huxley’s death. While this has been a particularly sensitive and challenging case, my investigation team’s relentless focus has always been on achieving justice for baby Huxley. Today we have managed to achieve that.”
