Wayne Rooney has shared his thoughts on Liverpool boss Arne Slot’s claims that Marc Guehi should have been sent off in their clash against Manchester City. He disagreed with the Dutch head coach, saying that a yellow card was a fair punishment for the defender.
The Reds hosted the Cityzens at Anfield in the Premier League clash on Sunday. After a goalless first half, Liverpool were in the ascendancy in the second. In the 69th minute, Mohamed Salah got on the end of a pass from Dominik Szoboszlai. Marc Guehi pulled him back at the edge of the box and received a yellow card.

After the game, Arne Slot said that it was a denial of a goalscoring opportunity and hence, Guehi should’ve been sent off. However, Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney said on BBC‘s Match of the Day (h/t Liverpool.com):
“No, I don’t think it’s a clear goalscoring opportunity, and I think for two reasons really. It’s a really good piece of play from Szoboszlai, and then it’s a really good pass, but then Mo Salah gets the wrong side of Guehi, Guehi pulls him back, so it’s a clear foul, we know that.
“But then you look at [Ruben] Dias’ position and [Gianluigi] Donnarumma, can Donnarumma get out to his feet, but Dias is covering the goal. So I don’t think it’s a clear goalscoring opportunity. I think it’s a yellow card,” he added.
While Liverpool scored five minutes later, they still lost the game 2-1.

In the post-match press conference, Arne Slot was asked about the referee’s decision to send off Dominik Szoboszlai in stoppage time. He agreed with the decision but added that Marc Guehi’s pullback on Mohamed Salah was a similar foul. He said (h/t Beanyman Sports):
“We can talk about the decisions. I would like to talk about the one time Mo was through on goal and Guehi holds his shirt. Everyone who has been in this stadium in the last eight years knows if Mo is in that position, it is a goal. So it is a denial of a goalscoring opportunity.”
In the game, meanwhile, Szoboszlai scored an exceptional free kick for Liverpool in the 74th minute. However, Manchester City equalized through Bernardo Silva 10 minutes later. Erling Haaland then scored via a penalty in stoppage time after Alisson Becker’s foul on Omar Marmoush in the box.
Late into stoppage time, Ryan Cherki appeared to make it 3-1. However, after a VAR check, the goal was chalked off, and Szoboszlai was sent off for a last-man pull on Haaland in the build-up to the goal.
