The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) launches a significant update to driving licence processing starting March 2026, targeting faster renewals for drivers with medical conditions. Drivers can expect processing times reduced to mere weeks, thanks to enhanced services and streamlined operations benefiting thousands of motorists.
Key Improvements in Processing
From March 2026, the DVLA introduces a new casework system that promises quicker turnaround times, expanded capacity, greater automation, advanced digital features, and improved online communication. The agency also boosts staffing in its contact centre to cut call waiting periods and better assist customers.
Government Officials Outline Changes
In response to concerns over delays, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport Simon Lightwood detailed the upcoming reforms. He stated: “The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) aims to process all applications as quickly as possible. However, driving licence applications where a medical condition(s) must be investigated before a licence can be issued can take longer as they vary widely in complexity and the DVLA is often reliant on information from third parties, including medical professionals, before a licence can be issued.
“The DVLA is currently rolling out a new casework system, scheduled to be operational in March 2026, which is expected to deliver significant improvements to the services provided to drivers with medical conditions. When fully implemented, this will provide improved turnaround times, increased capacity, increased automation, higher levels of digital functionality and increased digital communication.
“To reduce call waiting times and to support customers, the DVLA is also increasing staffing levels in its contact centre.”
Current Challenges and Future Outlook
Previously, decisions on licences requiring medical investigations averaged 44 working days, roughly nine weeks. These cases often involve complex reviews and input from external healthcare professionals. Most drivers renewing existing licences, however, can continue driving during processing if they meet specific criteria.
