Liverpool Finalize Agreement for Geertruida
Liverpool have finalized an agreement to sign defender Lutsharel Geertruida from Sunderland before Monday’s transfer deadline. The club has settled terms with the Dutch right-back and is now negotiating directly with Sunderland, where Geertruida is currently on loan from RB Leipzig. The Bundesliga outfit is unlikely to block the transfer, as Liverpool seek reinforcements following injuries to Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley.
During Saturday’s 4-1 Premier League victory over Newcastle, Dominik Szoboszlai stepped in at right-back for the absent duo, helping Liverpool snap a five-game winless run.
Details of the Transfer
Liverpool have already reached personal terms with the 25-year-old Geertruida, paving the way for his potential move from Sunderland’s Stadium of Light. Geertruida joined the Championship side on loan from RB Leipzig at the start of the season and has appeared in 17 Premier League games, starting 10 of them.
This potential switch would mark Geertruida’s fourth club in just 24 months, following his transfer from Feyenoord to RB Leipzig in the summer of 2024. The versatile defender began his professional career at Feyenoord, where he spent his first six seasons, including three under current Liverpool manager Arne Slot. Slot led Feyenoord to the Eredivisie title in the 2022/23 campaign, with Geertruida emerging as a key figure.
Geertruida’s Impressive Record Under Slot
Geertruida proved his value during Slot’s tenure at Feyenoord, becoming the most frequently used player with 127 appearances. In those matches, he contributed 16 goals and nine assists, showcasing his attacking prowess from defense. His experience and familiarity with Slot’s tactics make him a strong fit for Liverpool’s squad as they aim to bolster their backline.
