Piers Morgan Opens Up on Longtime Friendship with Donald Trump
Piers Morgan recently shared insights into his evolving relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump during an appearance on Jordan Peterson’s podcast. The two men developed a close connection years before Trump’s presidency, stemming from their time together on the American version of The Apprentice.
Morgan recounted how, after his departure from CNN in 2015, Trump was one of only three or four individuals in America who personally checked in on him. Trump reached out monthly for several months, asking, ‘How are you doing? Are you okay? Can I help?’ This gesture left a lasting impression on Morgan, who noted that while others might have had similar interests, Trump followed through on his support.
Key Moments in Their Alliance
Following Trump’s victory in the 2016 presidential election, Morgan called to congratulate him and requested an exclusive first international television interview. Trump agreed without hesitation, replying, ‘Done.’ True to his word, he granted Morgan a 45-minute interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Morgan described the opportunity as a major boost to his career and praised Trump’s commitment to keeping promises.
Morgan emphasized Trump’s strong sense of loyalty, stating that if someone supported him, Trump returned it tenfold. This trait, he added, is frequently underappreciated amid widespread criticism.
The Breaking Point and Reconciliation
Their bond faced challenges when Morgan directly challenged Trump on claims of a stolen 2020 election. ‘I’ve told him to his face,’ Morgan said, adding that Trump was unreceptive to the discussion.
Despite the tension, signs of reconciliation emerged. Last year, on Good Morning Britain, Morgan revealed a phone call with Trump on the morning of a planned meeting between Trump and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The discussion occurred just hours before a proposed U.S.-Ukraine deal fell through after a heated White House exchange involving both leaders and U.S. Vice President JD Vance.
Morgan shared the moment lightheartedly, describing how his phone rang while he was in a black cab in London. Seeing ‘DJT’ on the caller ID, he answered the call from Trump.
