Key Names on the Decline

Examinations of official birth registration data highlight the top ten boys’ names most at risk of falling out of the top 100 by 2026. Brody, Mason, and Toby lead the list with the most significant drops in popularity over the past year.

Brody saw the steepest fall, dropping 17 positions from 82nd to 99th place. Only 553 boys received this name in 2024, down from 630 the previous year, signaling a potential exit from the top rankings soon.

Mason followed with a 13-spot decline, moving from 50th to 63rd. Registrations fell from 1,118 in 2023 to 806 in 2024, illustrating how even modern favorites can quickly lose favor as tastes change.

Toby rounded out the top three, slipping 10 places from 76th to 86th. The name was given to 621 boys in 2024, compared to 678 in 2023, reflecting a steady shift toward more contemporary or timeless options.

Insights from Naming Experts

Prashant, a naming specialist, explains the reasons behind these shifts: “Names are a lot like trends in fashion or home décor. They can rise quickly when they feel fresh or modern, but just as fast they can fall out of favour as parents hunt for something new and unique.”

Prashant adds, “That’s why names like Brody, Mason, and Toby are falling out of favour. They were popular a few years ago, and now parents are moving toward options that feel more current or timeless.”

Observing patterns in personalized gifts, the specialist notes, “At Personalisedbee, we see this every year when families come to personalise gifts, and it’s fascinating to watch which names capture hearts one year and are quietly forgotten the next.”
