A significant fire erupted at Rushey Green Nursery in Lewisham, southeast London, on Saturday evening, prompting a rapid response from emergency services. Firefighters worked to contain the blaze, which heavily damaged the building’s roof and sent thick plumes of smoke into the sky.

Eight fire engines and approximately 60 firefighters arrived at the scene after initial calls reported at around 6:40 p.m. Crews from stations including Bromley, East Greenwich, and Peckham tackled the flames on the three-story structure. Officials confirmed that nearly half of the roof was destroyed by the fire, which was brought under control by 9:25 p.m.
No injuries occurred during the incident. To protect residents from the heavy smoke, authorities advised keeping windows and doors closed. Road closures were implemented around Rushey Green, leading to traffic delays, and locals were urged to steer clear of the area while crews continued operations into the night.

Videos shared on social media captured the intense flames consuming the nursery’s roof, with onlookers expressing shock at the scene. One resident noted, ‘Very bad fire, I was trying to get through and could smell the smoke in my car.’ Another described the devastation: ‘So sad to see, it was one well loved and established nursery.’ A third observer added, ‘Roof well alight. Lots of emergency services there and tons of smoke. Keep those windows closed.’
James J. Walsh, Councillor for Rushey Green, shared a video of the fire and warned the public: ‘There is an active fire incident on Rushey Green at The Rushey Green Nursery. Please amend your journeys and expect delays.’

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and an investigation is now in progress to determine its origin. Firefighters stayed on site for several hours following the initial containment to ensure safety.
