Enhanced Police Measures in Birmingham

Authorities in Birmingham have implemented Section 60 powers across targeted neighborhoods this evening and overnight, following a series of recent serious crimes. These measures, effective from 7 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, until 3 a.m. on Sunday, February 1, allow officers to conduct stop-and-search operations without requiring reasonable suspicion.

The decision comes in response to ongoing investigations into significant incidents, including a firearms discharge and a serious assault classified as a Section 18 wounding, both occurring earlier this month. Extra officers have been deployed to provide reassurance to residents in the affected areas.

The powers cover Winson Green, along with portions of Rotton Park and Brookfields. The designated zone extends from Handsworth Booth Street through the Jewellery Quarter and reaches Edgbaston village.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson stated: “We will be using Section 60 powers in parts of Birmingham this evening and overnight. These powers allow us to stop and search people without the need to have reasonable grounds. It follows recent serious incidents we’re investigating, including a firearms discharge and Section 18 wounding earlier in January. The powers will be in place in the area, from 7 p.m. today (Saturday) until 3 a.m. tomorrow morning (Sunday).”

Police emphasized their commitment to public safety, noting an increased presence in the community to maintain order and support local residents amid these investigations.
