Manchester United academy product Rhys Bennett has departed the club after 16 years, signing with League Two outfit Fleetwood Town. The 22-year-old defender spent last season on loan at Fleetwood’s Highbury Stadium, featuring in two spells that saw him make 38 appearances and score two goals. He also completed a six-month loan at Stockport County earlier in 2024.
Bennett’s Gratitude and Future Ambitions
Bennett expressed deep appreciation for his time at Manchester United, stating, “I spent 16 years there, and they helped me every step of the way. I’m really thankful to everyone for helping me grow, on and off the pitch.”
In an Instagram post announcing his exit, Bennett shared: “After 16 years at Man United, my time has come to an end. Can’t even put into words how appreciative I am of the people that have helped me on and off the pitch throughout my whole time at the club. I wish everyone the best. Ready to kick on and grow even more as a player and as a person.”
Support from Fellow Academy Players
The announcement drew warm responses from several Manchester United academy prospects. Chido Obi commented, “All the best my guy.”
Former Reds academy player Joe Hugill wrote, “Bensonnn what a guy, all the best brother.” Ethan Wheatley added, “What a guy, all the best brother.”
Shea Lacey posted, “My brother, all the best benno,” while Finley McAllister said, “Love ya son! Go get em kid.” Daniel Gore encouraged, “All the best brother. Go show em!!”
Bennett’s Achievements at United
Bennett joined Manchester United at age 10 and progressed through the ranks. He captained the youth team to victory in the FA Youth Cup in 2022, scoring in the final against Nottingham Forest.
Manchester United has also confirmed the exits of Joe Hugill and Toby Collyer this week, marking a period of transition for the club’s academy graduates.
