Past Backlash Over GPT-4o Removal

Last August, OpenAI launched GPT-5 and initially removed GPT-4o from ChatGPT without prior notice. This decision sparked significant user backlash, with many preferring GPT-4o’s warmer, more engaging tone over GPT-5’s direct responses. The outcry highlighted ethical concerns and users’ emotional connections to large language models.

In response, OpenAI quickly restored access to GPT-4o. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman addressed the issue, emphasizing the company’s commitment to user choice and customization options.

Enhanced Customization Options

Following the incident, OpenAI expanded ChatGPT’s personalization features. Users now select from seven distinct personalities or set custom instructions to tailor interactions, fulfilling promises to maintain flexibility in AI experiences.

Upcoming Model Retirements

OpenAI now confirms the permanent retirement of GPT-4o from ChatGPT, noting that only 0.1% of users engage with it daily. This move aligns with efforts to streamline the platform toward newer capabilities.

The retirement affects multiple models, ensuring ChatGPT focuses on the most relevant and efficient options. However, OpenAI clarifies no immediate changes to the API, so developers can continue using these models without disruption.
