Clarkson’s Thrilling Debut Win in Horse Racing

Jeremy Clarkson, the former Top Gear host, celebrates his first success as a horse racing owner after his six-year-old grey gelding, The Hawkstonian, secured a maiden victory in the 13:50 Novices’ Hurdle at Ffos Las racecourse in Wales.

The horse, named in honor of Clarkson’s popular Hawkstone beer, overcame early challenges to triumph on Friday. Clarkson acquired the gelding in 2023 through his syndicate, Old Gold Racing, but it faced difficulties in its initial season. This breakthrough marks a significant milestone for the 65-year-old television personality and his team.

Clarkson’s Joyful Celebration

Expressing his excitement on social media platform X, Clarkson announced: “Hawkstonians. I’m receiving word that our horse triumphed today at the Blue Ditch course in Wales. I’m going to celebrate with a beer.”

When fans questioned his choice to drink during Dry January, Clarkson responded that the concept doesn’t apply when one owns a brewery and a pub. He launched the Hawkstone brewery in 2021 and operates his own establishment, blending his passions for brewing and now horse racing.

Trainer’s Optimism Pays Off

The Hawkstonian trains under Ben Pauling, a multiple Cheltenham Festival winner. Pauling had anticipated better results after a tough previous year. In 2025, he noted: “Jeremy is used to horsepower of a different kind, and one that doesn’t have a mind of its own. So his first season as a racing owner may have tested his patience.”

Pauling added: “It’s great fun to be training for him and all the team are hoping The Hawkstonian will get himself into the winners’ enclosure as soon as he possibly can. We think he’s going to make up into a nice jumper, so this upcoming season is an exciting one with him set to go over hurdles. Hurdling is very much the way forward with him.”

The victory validates Pauling’s confidence, positioning The Hawkstonian as a promising contender in future jumps.

Syndicate and Social Media Buzz

Old Gold Racing, Clarkson’s ownership group, issued 3,250 shares at £60 each over 14 months, allowing fans to participate in the horse’s journey. The Hawkstonian’s official Instagram account joined the festivities, posting: “Buy that horse a beer! We knew it was coming … He’s been getting better and better well done to the team @benpaulingracing and well done to every one of our Hawkstonians who have supported him and our friends.”

This win highlights Clarkson’s growing involvement in equestrian sports, merging his entrepreneurial ventures with the thrill of the track.
