In a bid to foil graffiti vandals, Caltrans has put in synthetic ivy alongside U.S. 101 in downtown Los Angeles forward of the FIFA World Cup in June and the 2028 Summer time Olympics.

Video posted to Instagram not too long ago confirmed Caltrans crews bolting the faux foliage to retaining partitions alongside a stretch of the Santa Ana Freeway referred to as “The Slot” — a piece of depressed freeway that cuts by means of downtown Los Angeles and as soon as featured historic murals from the 1984 Olympics that at the moment are lined with spray paint.

“Because of a mural and associated agreements at this location and a number of other partitions alongside U.S. 101 in downtown Los Angeles, Caltrans will not be legally allowed to color over or take away graffiti,” Caltrans mentioned in an announcement to ABC7. “As a short lived measure, to guard the mural artworks, Caltrans has been putting in synthetic ivy, which has aesthetic advantages and acts as a graffiti deterrent and is a extra environmentally pleasant resolution to graffiti removing.”

Caltrans didn’t instantly reply to a request for extra info.
