Emotional vigil held for man killed by off-duty ICE agent on New 12 months’s Eve

A tearful candlelight vigil was held in Northridge for a person shot to demise on New 12 months’s Eve by an off-duty immigration officer.

Sunday night, a crowd of about 50 gathered on moist asphalt outdoors the Village Pointe condo advanced in Northridge to grieve Keith Porter Jr. The group included activists, relations and Porter’s co-workers from Dwelling Depot. The Compton man was shot on the advanced on Dec. 31 by an off-duty Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent, in response to authorities.

Black Lives Matter-Los Angeles — of which Porter was a member — stated in a information launch that the vigil was organized to memorialize the 33-year-old father and name for an unbiased investigation into his demise.

“We wish to acknowledge that one of many worst possible injustices has been dedicated, and there shall be time for us to protest,” Melina Abdullah, a co-director of Black Lives Matter Grassroots, stated in the course of the vigil. ”This can be a time for grief. … We aren’t going to be quiet.”

In a press release after the incident, Homeland Safety officers stated the agent was “compelled to defensively use his weapon” and opened fireplace “to guard his life and that of others.” Officers stated Porter was an “energetic shooter” risk.
