Younger girls in UK face extra strangulation and violent threats, says charity

LONDON (Reuters) -Britain is seeing extra violent threats to kill or hurt younger girls and ladies aged 16-25, with incidents of strangulation and suffocation additionally growing, main home abuse charity Refuge stated on Wednesday.

Refuge, one of many largest specialist home abuse organisations in Britain, stated 525 younger girls and ladies receiving long-term assist from the charity reported experiencing bodily violence between April 2024 and March 2025. Round half of them have been subjected to strangulation or suffocation — a 9% rise from a yr earlier.

Almost half of these reporting psychological abuse — about 615 people — stated their perpetrator had threatened to hurt them, marking a 4% improve. Moreover, 35% stated that they had been threatened with demise.

“Home abuse typically goes unnoticed, but these new figures reveal the harrowing actuality: many younger lives are being devastated by this horrific crime,” stated Refuge CEO Gemma Sherrington.
