Mild temperatures and occasional rain create a spring-like atmosphere this weekend in Waterloo Region. Residents should remember to set clocks forward one hour on Sunday for the start of daylight saving time.

Music and Concerts

An intimate contemporary folk and roots music concert features Winnipeg artists Onna Lou and Keri Latimer on Friday at 7 p.m. at Brubacher House, a Pennsylvania German heritage museum on the University of Waterloo campus. Tickets are available at the door for this all-ages event.

I, the Mountain performs on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Queen Street Commons.

The Sunday Grind series continues with local DJ Kasia spinning tracks at Rose Cafe on King Street in downtown Kitchener this Sunday.

Community and Garden Events

Seedy Saturday takes place from 10 a.m. to noon at the rare Eco Centre and Slit Barn in Cambridge. Master gardeners, groups like Seeds of Diversity, Make it Sow, and the Cambridge Food Bank offer seed swaps and planting tips for gardens and patio pots.

Sports Action

The first-place Kitchener Rangers host the Soo Greyhounds on Friday at The Aud, celebrating International Women’s Day by honoring women in the community hockey scene, including administrative staff, moms, and billet moms. The Rangers travel to Windsor on Sunday to face the Spitfires.

Guelph Storm hosts the Owen Sound Attack on Friday evening and the Soo Greyhounds on Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre.

K-W Titans play the Lake Erie Jackals on Sunday afternoon at home, marking a community sock hop for World Down Syndrome Day. Fans can wear silly socks and donate new men’s athletic socks during the third-quarter toss to support Hockey Helps the Homeless.

Tri-City Roller Derby kicks off the season with a home opener on Saturday at New Hamburg Arena. Tri-City Thunder battles Queen City Furies at 5 p.m., followed by Tri-City Lightning versus Queen City Sirens at 7 p.m. Tickets are available online or at the door.

Festivals and Cultural Celebrations

Femme Folks Fest spans Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Sunday at 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. across Centre in the Square, Globe Studios in Kitchener, and uptown Waterloo. The event includes comedy, dance, theatre, music, and storytelling through March 15. Highlights feature The Pinch FamJamboree family improv and music show, K-W Comedy All-Stars Just A Joke, the one-woman show Becoming Psychic by Gada Jane, and the workshop I Hear Her Calling: Earthly Connections and Creations.

Irish Real Life Festival opens Saturday at noon with musical performances, workshops including knit repairs, and more through the weekend and until March 17. Sunday’s Threads of the Sacred: An Evening of Celtic Spirituality occurs at Conrad Grebel College Chapel in Waterloo.

Chinese Lantern Festival Celebration runs Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Waterloo Public Library’s John M. Harper Branch. Enjoy activities, music, performances, crafts, Tai Chi, calligraphy, lantern riddles, and interactive booths in a drop-in event.

Family-Friendly Fun

Paper Bag Princess Day happens Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Guelph Public Library’s main branch. A live reading precedes art projects and a meet-and-greet with a paper bag princess in this no-registration drop-in program.

Bonus: Skating Competition

The Skate Canada Cup unfolds all weekend at Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex, where novice, gold, and open synchronized skating teams vie for the national title. Competitions start Friday, with tickets still available.
