President Donald Trump might prolong his upcoming self-imposed tariff pause deadlines, the White Home mentioned Thursday.

Requested if Trump remains to be dedicated to a deadline to strike commerce offers by July, press secretary Karoline Leavitt mentioned that date “just isn’t crucial.”

“The president can merely present these nations with a deal in the event that they refuse to make us one by the deadline,” Leavitt mentioned at a press briefing.

“And meaning the president can choose a reciprocal tariff fee that he believes is advantageous for the US and for the American employee,” she mentioned.

She later added, “Maybe it may very well be prolonged, however that is a choice for the president to make.”

Trump in late Could had threatened to impose 50% tariffs on the European Union. However two days later he agreed to delay that responsibility till July 9, after European Fee President Ursula von der Leyen mentioned she wanted an extension to “attain deal.”

Trump can also be arising towards the expiration of a 90-day pause on his imposition of “reciprocal” U.S. tariffs on almost all different nations.

That reprieve, which dropped the near-universal tariffs to a blanket 10%, is ready to finish on July 8.

Shares rose to session highs following Leavitt’s remarks Thursday afternoon.
