Senior Whitehall officials indicate that Dame Antonia Romeo is the leading candidate for Cabinet Secretary because she aligns with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s efforts to restrict the release of private messages related to Peter Mandelson’s appointment as US ambassador.
Reasons Behind Recent Leadership Change
The dismissal of Sir Chris Wormald stems from Starmer’s push for stricter control over these documents. Officials note that Wormald adopted a more lenient approach to disclosures, prompting his removal.
A senior Whitehall official remarked: “Part of the reason for the strong reaction to Chris’s sacking is the belief that No. 10 seeks to suppress the files’ release.”
Another source added: “The release of the documents faces tight oversight. Starmer believes he can weather scrutiny by withholding the most damaging ones, a role expected of Antonia.”
Mandelson-Epstein Investigation Triggers Disclosures
MPs compelled the government to publish the files following a criminal probe into allegations that Mandelson shared sensitive information with Jeffrey Epstein. Concerns persist that the messages expose Mandelson’s significant influence within the government.
No. 10 officials reacted sharply to Health Secretary Wes Streeting’s decision to disclose his private exchanges with Mandelson. In those messages, Mandelson expressed fears of being “toast” at the next election and highlighted the absence of an economic growth strategy.
A Whitehall source explained: “Streeting disrupted their disclosure limits. They aim to restrict releases to files directly tied to Mandelson’s appointment, excluding his broader government role.”
Government Response and Opposition Calls
A minister observed: “A cover-up controversy looms, but they view it as preferable to the documents, which could prove devastating for Starmer.”
The Cabinet Office defends Romeo’s candidacy, calling her an “outstanding leader with a 25-year record of excellent public service.” Appointments follow oversight by the First Civil Service Commissioner.
Tory Cabinet Office spokesman Alex Burghart demands: “Starmer must deliver the full, unfiltered material to the intelligence and security committee without delay.”
