A heavy police presence descended on Georgian Mall in Barrie Tuesday evening as authorities investigate a reported smash-and-grab robbery at the Michael Hill jewelry store around 6 p.m.
Eyewitnesses inside the mall describe suspects armed with weapons who smashed display cases and fled with valuables. Barrie police have not yet confirmed details of the incident.
Recurring Jewelry Thefts at the Mall
Jewelry stores at Georgian Mall have endured at least four armed robberies in the past two years. Thieves repeatedly storm in, shatter display cases, and escape with bags of jewelry in mere seconds.
Dia Amore Jewellers Targeted Twice
Dia Amore Jewellers faced two hammer-wielding robberies within 12 months, in August 2024 and August 2025. Following the second attack, five masked young men were arrested after their stolen getaway car crashed in a construction zone on Innisfil Beach Road.
One suspect pleaded guilty to armed robbery and received time served in February. Officers recovered a gun from one accused at arrest. Three suspects were youths protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Charm Diamond Centres Assault
Days before Christmas, young thieves armed with pepper spray and hammers struck Charm Diamond Centres. Five suspects, including some as young as 14, were apprehended with provincial police aid in Essa Township. Two were denied bail, with allegations yet to be proven in court.
