Investigation Underway Following Concerning Disappearance
Law enforcement officials have expressed serious concerns about the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, mother of ‘Today’ show co-host Savannah Guthrie. Authorities confirmed they’re treating her Tucson, Arizona residence as a potential crime scene following her disappearance Saturday night.
Evidence Suggests Involuntary Departure
Investigators revealed that Guthrie left behind critical personal items including her keys, identification, phone, and necessary medications. “She is very limited in her mobility. She did not just walk out of there,” stated Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos during a press briefing. “There are other things at the scene that indicate she did not leave on her own.”
Family representatives confirmed Guthrie doesn’t suffer from dementia or cognitive impairment. Neighbors reported her front door was found open after she failed to attend Sunday church services, despite being dropped off after a church event Saturday evening.
Multi-Agency Search Intensifies
Search efforts now involve:
- Pima County Sheriff’s homicide detectives
- Customs and Border Patrol personnel
- Aerial surveillance including drones and planes
The FBI has reportedly been notified due to the home’s proximity to the Mexican border. While authorities continue to classify this as a search and rescue operation, they haven’t ruled out criminal involvement.
Family Appeals for Information
Savannah Guthrie issued a statement expressing gratitude for public support: “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom. We thank law enforcement for their hard work and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s office.”
NBC colleagues held a prayer circle for Guthrie’s safe return as the television personality temporarily steps away from professional duties. Nancy Guthrie, widowed since 1989, is survived by three children including Savannah and two older siblings.
Authorities urge anyone with information to contact Pima County Sheriff’s Office at 520-351-4900.
