Former NRL standout Rhys Wesser has been charged with stalking a woman he was romantically involved with in Sydney’s Redfern suburb.
Authorities allege the 46-year-old intimidated the 53-year-old woman, known to him, between January 23 and 31. Police filed the charge on February 5 for one count of stalking, claiming the actions intended to cause fear of physical or mental harm.
Court Proceedings
The case appeared at Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court on February 18. An interim apprehended violence order now protects the woman. Wesser did not attend the hearing. Magistrate Michael Love excused his appearance for the next listing on March 4.
Wesser’s NRL Legacy
Nicknamed ‘Rhys Lightning’ for his blistering pace, Wesser scored 129 tries across 219 NRL games from 1998 to 2011. He debuted with Penrith Panthers, amassing 113 tries and earning cult status. In 2002, he set a club record with 19 tries in a season and contributed to the Panthers’ 2003 premiership victory over the Sydney Roosters.
Wesser joined South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2009 but suffered a severe knee injury early in the season. He played 41 games for the club before retiring in August 2011. The Queensland native also represented the Maroons in four State of Origin matches.
