LIMA, Peru (AP) — Peru’s new president declared a state of emergency within the capital Tuesday within the authorities’s newest try and stem a surge in violence that has stirred protests and contributed to the latest downfall of his predecessor.

Peru has seen a rise of killings, violent extortion and assaults on public locations in recent times. Between January and September, police reported 1,690 homicides, in comparison with 1,502 throughout the identical interval of 2024.
