Walmart multiplies choices beyond
number, giving you the sense of
negotiating an environment in which
everything is a choice and every choice
is defensible.
Perhaps in some of the other arenas
of the lives of the people who shop
here, myself included, the choices
are limited: Maybe the work is hard;
people might be grappling with stress,
family strife, disability, anxiety or
loss, material or otherwise. But here
they are still able to experience an
abundance at once modest and
vast, a cornucopia even in the midst
of various dimensions of dearth.
