Adam Gase is set to return to the NFL five years after his New York stint coaching Sam Darnold. According to reports emerging on Monday, Gase has been hired by the Los Angeles Chargers as an offensive assistant in charge of the passing game.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported Gase’s return in a post on X on Monday. Football fans on the platform have since shared different reactions to the report. Chuck Nickel wrote:

“This man should be banned for how bad he made Darnold look.”

“The man who ruined Sam Darnold now gets Herbert.”

Roxy Rashed also commented:

“If anyone can unlock year 7 Justin Herbert, it might be the guy who made Peyton look historic. Big brain move by Harbaugh….”

MoneyDLuffy noted:

“Guy failed upward for years, and now he’s back like nothing happened. Chargers fans better hope he stays far away from play-calling duties because his track record speaks for itself.”

“Adam Gase returning to “fix” a passing game is like hiring an arsonist to be a fire safety consultant. What could go wrong?”

Gase gained a reputation early in his career as one of the brightest offensive minds in the NFL. During stints with the Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears as offensive coordinator, he coached Jay Cutler, Peyton Manning, and Tim Tebow.

He was hired as head coach by the Dolphins in 2016, spending only three seasons before he was fired.

He left Miami with a 23-25 record and was hired next by the Jets, where he coached Sam Darnold.

Looking back on Adam Gase’s stint coaching Sam Darnold at New York

Adam Gase became the Jets’ head coach in 2019 amid expectations that he would develop Sam Darnold as a quarterback, given his experience with top quarterbacks. However, it was a disappointing spell, as the team finished 32nd in total offense through Gase’s two-year tenure.

The Jets started Gase’s first season with a 1-7 record, with Darnold missing three games with glandular fever. However, the team won six of their final eight games to end the season 7-9. The following season was worse, as the Jets recorded no wins in their first 13 games and ended the season with a 2-14 record.

The Jets subsequently fired Gase, who left the franchise with a 9-23 record.
