The New York Jets’ quarterback situation is in turmoil after a disappointing 2025 season. The team used three signal-callers: Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor and Brady Cook; however, they all struggled to make an impact.

The Jets are likely to part ways with Fields. NFL analyst Craig Carton named his pick to become the franchise’s QB1 on Wednesday.

“If you had to guess, how much money did Kirk Cousins make in the past 2 years? $100 million!” Carton said, via “The Craig Carton Show.” “So now he’s gonna be one of those guys that a team like the Jets have an interest in! I think he’s the perfect guy for the Jets and (offensive coordinator Frank) Reich.

“You do not have to pay him a lot of money. He has made over $400 million in his career. He knows it’s almost over. He gets to play for the New York Jets. So the Jets have a competent quarterback.”

Kirk Cousins was the backup of Michael Penix Jr. with the Atlanta Falcons last season. Penix’s knee injury in November paved the way for Cousins to take the starting job. He started eight games and posted a 5-3 record while throwing for 1,721 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Carton added that New York can look for another quarterback in the 2027 NFL draft or bet its money on a third- or fourth-round pick this year.

Jets GM on the team’s quarterback situation

New York has not committed to a starting quarterback. Jets general manager Darren Mougey made the team’s stance clear on the situation on Tuesday.

“Yeah, Justin’s (Fields) on the roster,” Mougey said to reporters. “And just like every other position, we’re going to evaluate the quarterback position through every landscape, whether that’s trade, on the street, free agency, to see what we can add to the team.”

Justin Fields signed a two-year, $40 million deal with the Jets in March. He is tied to the franchise until the end of the 2026 season, giving it a cushion as it explores other options.
