HBO has confirmed that the highly anticipated Harry Potter series is targeting an early 2027 release window. According to HBO Chief Casey Bloys, fans can expect the first season to premiere sometime between January and April 2027. In an interview with the Deadline, he stated:

“I would say, to narrow it down to some extent, early 2027. And now you’re going to ask, does that mean January, February, March, April, that we’re not ready to say. I’ll say early 2027.”

This new version promises to explore the Wizarding World more deeply than the Harry Potter films. By dedicating an entire season to each book, the show will include the main characters and subplots, like Peeves the Poltergeist, that were previously cut for time. Production for the Harry Potter series is underway, having begun in July 2025 at Leavesden Studios.

HBO’s Harry Potter series cast details, production and everything we know so far

In the upcoming Harry Potter series, Dominic McLaughlin will appear as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. About 32,000 children were reported to have auditioned to play the trio. Alongside them, John Lithgow is set to play Albus Dumbledore, while Janet McTeer will portray Professor Minerva McGonagall.

Paapa Essiedu will take on the role of Severus Snape. Meanwhile, Hagrid will be played by Nick Frost. Warwick Davis, who played Professor Flitwick in the original Harry Potter films, is the only actor confirmed to return to his role for the series.

This new adaptation is planned as a “decade-long” project, with each season being a faithful and in-depth retelling of one of the seven original books by J.K. Rowling. By using the television format, the creators aim to include many details and characters from the novels that had to be cut from the famous film series.

The series is a major collaboration between HBO, Warner Bros. Television, and Brontë Film & TV. The creative team is led by showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod, both known for their award-winning work on the show Succession.

Initial development of the Harry Potter series began in January 2021 when rumors first emerged that HBO was exploring a series. However, the project was only officially greenlit in April 2023 during a Warner Bros. Discovery investor presentation. It was then announced as a “decade-long” series with J.K. Rowling serving as an executive producer to ensure a faithful adaptation.

Set for early 2027 release, the first season of the series, which adapts Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, will consist of eight episodes. With a total runtime estimated at around eight hours, each episode is expected to be roughly one hour long.
