British journalist Piers Morgan has criticized Britain’s situation over treating the elderly. His comments came after a 97-year-old woman passed away after waiting for 10 days for the hospital to arrive in the UK.
In an X post dated February 23, Piers Morgan quoted a news piece by the Daily Mail, reporting the death of a 97-year-old senior citizen after having to wait 10 days for an ambulance. She was suspected of having suffered a hip break. Morgan wrote:
“This is absolutely disgusting. What the hell has Britain become when we treat our elderly so appallingly? Having myself been through a similar fractured femur injury recently, she must have been in agony, the poor woman. Shameful.”
As reported by the Daily Mail piece quoted by Piers Morgan, the 97-year-old, Babette Burge, was found struggling to breathe by a caregiver on October 19, 2025, at her home in Newport, Isle of Wight. She died the same day, a few hours later, after 1 pm. There were signs of “mottling” on her skin, which is a sign of reduced blood flow due to low temperatures.
Five days before her death, Burge was suspected of having fractured her hip after a paramedic examined a “shortened and rotated” leg. However, the official cause of death was pneumonia. Burge, a pensioner, was told to wait 10 days to get to St. Mary’s Hospital in Newport in an ambulance. However, she fell down before the transfer.
While addressing the incident, Piers Morgan also referred to his own medical situation. The broadcaster underwent hip replacement surgery in January this year after he fractured his femur by falling down in a London hotel.

On January 18, 2026, Piers Morgan shared an image of himself doing a thumbs-up from a hospital bed. In his post, the broadcaster revealed that he fell in a London hotel resulting in a fractured femur. He had to undergo hip replacement surgery. He wrote:
“BREAKING NEWS: 1. Tripped on small step. 2. In a London hotel restaurant. (🙄) 3. Fractured femur. 4. So badly I needed new hip. 5. Recovering in hospital. 6. Crutches for 6wks 7. No long-haul for 12 wks. 8. New Year off to a cracking start! 9. I blame Donald Trump.”
Piers Morgan continued to share updates about his health condition on X. He shared footage from Good Morning Britain, where the hosts jokingly claimed he was under the influence when he tripped. Morgan confirmed that he was sober, writing:
“To clarify, ZERO alcohol was involved in the incident.”
Further, Morgan then quoted a Metro UK news piece which mentioned the journalist’s £18K lavish London home “man cave” where he would be recovering after the injury. The 60-year-old broadcaster laughed about it, quoted the post and wrote:
“I don’t think I’ll be ‘recovering’ in the man cave… but I might be able to host @PiersUncensored from there for a bit. Working on that now.”
Morgan went on to host his talk show, Piers Morgan Uncensored, from his home for some time before returning on air.
Speaking to HELLO! Magazine, Morgan’s wife, Celia Walden, also opened up about the injury. She said:
“It’s been terrible. He just slipped on a small step and then had to have a full hip replacement. Luckily, he’s no longer in pain. I feel bad for being here tonight and he can’t be, but I left Piers with supper and the remote and I will be home to tuck him in!”
Walden spoke while hosting a soiree with the London Chamber Orchestra in the end of January.
Piers Morgan appears to be back on his feet now, as of this writing.
