The Royal Rumble 2026 saw a high-profile match-up for the biggest prize in the wrestling industry, and a 41-year-old WWE superstar would suffer a heartbreaking defeat.

At the Royal Rumble 2026, there were only four matches – the Women’s and Men’s Royal Rumble bouts, the AJ Styles vs Gunther match, and the Undisputed WWE Championship match between Drew McIntyre and Sami Zayn. The 41-year-old Sami Zayn defeated Randy Orton, Trick Williams, and Damian Priest in a Fatal-4-Way match last week at Saturday Night’s Main Event to become the number one contender to the Undisputed WWE Title. McIntyre already held an incredible one-sided record of 20-0, including non-televised matches against Sami Zayn.

At the Royal Rumble 2026, Drew McIntyre made it 21-0 by defeating Sami Zayn, who suffered a heartbreaking loss in the process. Prior to January 31st, 2026, Zayn had never lost in Saudi Arabia, and this marks the first time that he has suffered a defeat in the Kingdom.

For the Scottish Warrior, he looks like he is likely to be heading into WrestleMania 42 as the WWE Champion. He could still end up defending his WWE title at Elimination Chamber, although that’s yet to be confirmed just yet.
