Gary Neville has cautioned Arsenal that Chelsea enters their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg with surging confidence following recent dramatic turnarounds against West Ham and Napoli.
Chelsea’s Thrilling Recovery Against West Ham
Chelsea trailed West Ham 2-0 at halftime in a Premier League clash, with goals from Jarrod Bowen and Crysencio Summerville putting the Hammers in a strong position. However, the Blues mounted a stunning second-half rally, with Joao Pedro, Marc Cucurella, and Enzo Fernandez scoring to secure a 3-2 victory. This marked the first time in Premier League history that Chelsea overcame a two-goal halftime deficit to win.
Earlier in the week, Chelsea staged another impressive comeback in the Champions League against Napoli. Trailing at the break under Antonio Conte’s side, they scored three second-half goals to win 3-2, advancing directly to the knockout stages and eliminating the Serie A champions.
Neville Highlights Chelsea’s Momentum
Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville praised Chelsea’s resilience while noting their inconsistency. “What a great comeback for Chelsea, creating their own history having never done it before – coming back from two goals down,” Neville said. “Devastation for West Ham, they contributed enormously to the game. But Chelsea, you can watch them in the same game and think two completely different things. They looked like kids and babies for large parts of the game and then all of a sudden they come to life and they are a real force.”
Neville added that this momentum positions Chelsea strongly for their January 21 visit to Arsenal, where they trail 3-2 from the first leg. “They go into the top four and they’ll go into that game against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-final on Tuesday so confident having come back in the last two games against Napoli and West Ham,” he noted. He encouraged West Ham to stay positive, saying, “West Ham, keep your heads up. If you play like that, you’ve got a great chance of staying up.”
Arsenal’s Solid Recent Performances
Arsenal also enters the second leg with high spirits after a flawless Champions League group stage, including a win over Kairat, followed by a dominant 4-0 Premier League victory against Leeds United. As heavy favorites at Elland Road, the Gunners avoided any slip-ups after three straight league draws without a win.
Chelsea’s Noni Madueke emphasized the importance of their recent form. “It’s massive. Obviously, our last couple of performances in the Premier League haven’t been the greatest in terms of results, but today was a real statement,” Madueke said. “We’re going to watch what [City and Villa] do and focus on our game as well on Tuesday. That’s most important for us. Adding confidence after a performance like this, not only just the win, but a really dominant performance. We’re going into that game on Tuesday knowing what’s at stake and knowing what we need to do.”
The winner of the Arsenal-Chelsea tie will face either Manchester City or defending champions Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final on March 22.
