To the editor: I definitely don’t agree with a lot of Jonah Goldberg’s columns within the Los Angeles Occasions. However his piece this week was proper on and actually moved me (“Trump isn’t desirous about being honorable — he’d reasonably be feared,” Jan. 13).

Goldberg writes eloquently concerning the near-total absence of honor within the Trump administration’s actions, notably within the space of international relations. President Trump’s designs on Greenland in addition to his threats to the governments of Cuba, Colombia and different Latin American nations are completely missing in honor. It is a unhappy time for the US.

I’m reminded of the motto of Hollywood Excessive Faculty (class of ‘59): “Search honor by way of service.” It is a maxim that I’ve carried all through my life. Based mostly on this column, I believe that it’s definitely one to which Goldberg would subscribe. It’s positively not one to which the present administration would subscribe.

Richard Seligman, Simi Valley

..

To the editor: I started crying this morning as I learn Goldberg’s most up-to-date column. Goldberg’s level is that Trump associates energy with respect, however that sort of respect has soiled underpinnings. It’s about crushing the lives of others, all to your personal materials development. How is Trump any totally different from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has attacked Ukraine for years now? Seemingly nothing will cease both chief.

So why did I cry? The thought of attacking Greenland hits on the debasement of human worth and on the lack of regard for the sovereignty of different nations. Folks turn out to be bugs to be swept away. The drive for entry to cash sources blinds all. I really feel disgrace. I really feel ache for individuals who are shedding their means to dwell their lives with true respect.

We have now curdled our humanity and corrupted our morality. That makes me weep.

Gwen Rigby, Santa Barbara

..

To the editor: “Constrained by his personal morality” may be a legitimate customary — if the president’s morality had been of a better customary. A lot larger.

Sadly, not solely does Trump signify a major variety of voters, however he will even affect and provides permission to politicians for the foreseeable future. Will the pendulum swing again to honoring not simply “energy or glory, however advantage”? It’d, however not in a single day. And it depends upon the way you outline morality and advantage.
