To the editor: I by no means thought I’d say “bravo” to Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). Nevertheless, I used to be heartened by his assertion relating to President Trump’s proposed U.S. possession of Greenland: “The usage of drive to grab the sovereign democratic territory of certainly one of America’s most loyal and succesful allies could be an particularly catastrophic act of strategic self-harm to America and its world affect” (“GOP senators break with Trump to rein in use of army with out Congress’ approval,” Jan. 8).

We should respect the territories of our NATO allies above all. Many could be ashamed and embarrassed if our nation resorted to imperialistic techniques resembling invasion and/or takeover of a sovereign territory.

Definitely, the U.S. may provide to purchase Greenland from Denmark, however Denmark doesn’t appear inclined to promote. As an ally, we should always respect its needs. Congratulations to the members of Congress who’re standing as much as Trump on this subject!

To the editor: Trump’s reported want to accumulate Greenland by risk or coercion resembles a geopolitical mugging — extra akin to a road theft in Central Park than a reputable diplomatic proposal (“Denmark, Greenland envoys met with White Home officers over Trump’s name for a ‘takeover,’” Jan. 8). Merely put, it’s theft wrapped within the language of energy.

What makes this much more troubling is that Trump has expressed assist for posting the Ten Commandments in school rooms, certainly one of which clearly prohibits stealing. If the precept “thou shalt not steal” is to imply something, it should apply not solely to people but additionally to nations — and positively to these in energy.

This seems to be one more instance the place Trump holds others to ethical and authorized requirements that he feels don’t apply to himself

To the editor: The concept that the U.S. could purchase Greenland, as Secretary of State Marco Rubio has beforehand instructed, isn’t with out precedent. Louisiana, Alaska and Gadsden had been all monetary offers.

Aren’t there, nonetheless, some vital points relating to Greenland? Figuring out a value will likely be a lot simpler than figuring out who truly will get the cash. Denmark or the precise residents of the island? And talking of the individuals who dwell in Greenland, do they get a say within the sale?

The potential of promoting territory and transferring management of the inhabitants to a different authorities with out the consent of that inhabitants is scary. It might sound tongue-in-cheek to recommend that Trump (the true property man) could be open to promoting a blue state or two, however wouldn’t that be much like Denmark promoting Greenland to us?
