Donald Trump

The editorial in the Feb. 19 Boston Herald is a timely one.

Trump Derangement Syndrome seems to be clawing back into politics among Democratic lawmakers – some vowing to boycott the upcoming State of the Union speech by President Trump next week. Our own Senator Ed Markey has announced he is among them. It is outright disgusting and a shame he plans to do so. It is time for him to retire from the scene once and for all. Having been in the senate for quite some time, he has accomplished nothing to solve problems plaguing us but just wants to emulate the disrespectful act of former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who shredded the State of Union speech by President Trump in his first term.

If one reads the daily news or watches the mainstream networks’ never-ending blathering, it is hard not to miss the Democratic politicians jockeying for power in upcoming elections continue to demonize President Trump regardless of what he does, despite the fact that his accomplishments in his second term in office to date are remarkable and noteworthy.

It is time for Democrats to join him in solving problems.

Puerto Rico

I must point out some errors in the Feb. 19 column by Julio Fuentes (“Puerto Rico’s blackouts are America’s problem”).

The congressional oversight board created in 2016, which the writer insists is responsible for the island’s power failures, had many goals, including the island’s declared bankruptcy.

Power grid failure has been endemic on the island since I was a child growing up there in 1950s and ’60s. Structural weakness and corruption played no small part. And in the aftermath of two disastrous hurricanes, any reliability on the existing power grid disappeared.

So while it is always easier to lay blame at the feet of “America,” Puerto Rico’s problems are inherently its own.

Voter ID

Voter identification is needed to safeguard our nation.  Every country in Europe requires voter ID.  Every country in Africa requires voter ID.  Every country in South America requires a voter ID.  Are all these countries Jim Crow 2.0? No, they are not. Chuck Schumer keeps up a tired diatribe that voter ID will suppress voting.

Let common sense prevail and pass the SAVE America Act.  When every citizen knows that voting is secure, then we can all live with the results of an election.
