Liam Rosenior faces backlash for handing Alejandro Garnacho a written note before substituting him during Chelsea’s heavy Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
Chelsea Crumble Against PSG
Chelsea faced an uphill battle to overturn a 5-2 first-leg deficit against the reigning European champions PSG. A disastrous start to the second leg dashed any hopes of a comeback. Mamadou Sarr’s early error gifted Khvicha Kvaratskhelia a goal in the sixth minute, followed by Bradley Barcola’s stunning finish on the quarter-hour mark. PSG added a third through Senny Mayulu, securing an 8-2 aggregate victory under Luis Enrique’s guidance.
With the match decided, Rosenior made substitutions to rest key players ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash with Everton. However, his decision to pass Garnacho a note with 30 minutes remaining sparked widespread criticism.
Leboeuf Brands Tactic ‘Insane’
Former Chelsea defender and World Cup winner Frank Leboeuf labeled the move incomprehensible. In an interview with ESPN FC, Leboeuf questioned its relevance, stating: “I would’ve gone to the touchline and asked if it was a joke or are you kidding? You think the things I read will be useful right now? It doesn’t mean anything. Maybe he was writing a joke. The funny thing is the guy who received it was looking for another player to give him instructions.”
Leboeuf continued: “Maybe the player he was talking about was already substituted, we don’t know. Maybe he lost his mind, that was insane. He’s not the only one to do those kinds of things. I don’t know what the new coaches from the new era are trying to show us, we know it’s completely useless.”
Call for Warrior Mentality
Rosenior’s approach has drawn unflattering comparisons during his tenure. Addressing Chelsea’s dressing room amid Enzo Fernandez’s doubts about his future and an upcoming FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale, Leboeuf urged a shift in attitude. He advised: “What we did was shameful. We didn’t do what we had to do, especially the second leg. You play at home, you have to have a warrior attitude, be aggressive in the right way, scare the opponent and show them you are at home.”
