L.A. sheriff seeks assist discovering assault rifle that deputies misplaced

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Division is investigating how an assault rifle went lacking from — and doubtlessly fell out of — the trunk of a squad automobile in South L.A.

Deputies first observed the Colt M4 assault rifle was lacking from the trunk of their squad automobile on Saturday night time someday between 10:30 and 11, in response to a press release issued by the Sheriff’s Division.

The weapon had been stored in “a black, hard-shelled storage case” within the car’s trunk, together with 5 magazines, every loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition.

The Sheriff’s Division requested the general public to assist discover the assault rifle and recognized the route that the deputies traveled Saturday night time in hopes of finding the weapon.

The deputies traveled about 4 miles, heading north on Normandie Avenue close to the division’s South L.A. Station earlier than turning west on Imperial Freeway, north on Hawthorne Boulevard, then west on 104th Avenue to Inglewood Avenue.

“Upon realizing the rifle was lacking, personnel from the South Los Angeles Station instantly initiated a search of the station car parking zone and retraced the deputies’ route of journey,” the Sheriff’s Division mentioned within the assertion. “Surveillance footage from the world is at present being reviewed, and native regulation enforcement companies have been notified of the incident.”

The division additionally mentioned it was initiating an investigation to find out “whether or not processes and procedures have been adopted.” The union representing L.A. County sheriff’s deputies didn’t instantly reply to a request for remark.
