The Practice Field Moment That’s Breaking Hearts EverywhereJ.J. Watt’s Raw Tribute to Rondale MooreMoore’s Career Was Cut Short By Injuries, Then TragedyWhy the Clip Won’t Stop Going ViralThank You!

A behind-the-scenes clip from a 2022 episode of Hard Knocks In Season: The Arizona Cardinals has gone viral again — and this time, the football world can barely get through it. The footage captures a quiet sideline exchange between J.J. Watt and then-teammate Rondale Moore during a Wednesday practice.

When it first aired, it was a feel-good clip. Now, in the wake of Moore’s death at age 25, it’s become something no one was prepared for.

Moore was found dead in his New Albany, Indiana, home on February 21.

Two days later, on February 23, Moore’s cause of death was revealed. The star wide receiver had died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Practice Field Moment That’s Breaking Hearts Everywhere

The clip dates back to the 2022 Cardinals season. Both Watt, who signed with the team in 2021, and Moore, who was drafted by the team that same year, were on Arizona’s roster.

NFL on Fox shared a video of the interaction on November 13, 2022.

In the footage, Moore was visibly upset with himself on the sidelines after dropping a routine ball. Watt walked over and asked if he was okay. Moore’s answer was blunt: “No.”

When Watt asked what was wrong, Moore said: “I dropped a ball.”

Watt asked if the ball hit his hands. Moore nodded.

Then Watt did something that fans are now calling a masterclass in being a great teammate.

“Oh, yeah. Nope. That’s your job description. That’s going to be tough, you know?,” Watt said in a stern voice, like he was about to lay into the young receiver.

But he pivoted.

“I’m kidding. It’s fine. Is it Wednesday or is it Sunday?” Watt said. “Be pissed about it. Stay after. Catch a few extra balls. And then catch it on Sunday.”

He didn’t tell Moore to shake it off. He didn’t dismiss the frustration. He acknowledged the standard, cracked a joke to ease the tension, and then gave Moore something concrete to do: Be pissed. Stay after. Fix it. Show up Sunday.

Moore still wasn’t going easy on himself.

“I mean, I wasn’t locked in. It’s like a routine thing,” Moore told Watt.

“Yeah, you know how many times I’ve been knocked on my a** in my career?” the future Hall of Famer replied. “You get back up and you go out there and you catch the next one.”

That last line — “you get back up and you go out there and you catch the next one” — now carries a weight no one could have anticipated when the cameras first captured it.

J.J. Watt’s Raw Tribute to Rondale Moore

On February 21, Watt took to X to pay tribute to his former teammate.

“Can’t even begin to fathom or process this. There’s just no way. Way too soon. Way too special. So much left to give,” Watt wrote. “Rest in Peace Rondale.”

From someone who had stood beside Moore on that practice field and told him to catch the next one, those words — “Way too special. So much left to give” — hit with unmistakable personal ache.

att spent 12 seasons in the NFL, including two with the Arizona Cardinals before retiring after the 2022 season. He finished with 114.5 sacks, per ESPN. He was a 5-time All-Pro and three-time Defensive Player of the Year.

Those numbers alone would secure his place among the NFL’s all-time greats. But the Hard Knocks clip shows the other side of Watt — the part that never made a stat sheet.

A three-time Defensive Player of the Year, walking across a practice field to check in on a young wide receiver who dropped a ball. A defensive end reaching out to a player at an entirely different position because he saw someone who needed a boost.

The resurfaced video is a reminder that Watt’s impact on players around him extended well beyond game day. His willingness to approach Moore in that moment speaks to the kind of teammate he was on practice fields when no one was supposed to be paying attention.

Moore’s Career Was Cut Short By Injuries, Then Tragedy

Moore played three seasons with the Cardinals and had at least 40 catches, 350 yards and one touchdown each year, per ESPN, before injuries derailed his career.

The stretch of setbacks that followed his time in Arizona was brutal. He suffered a season-ending injury after being traded to the Atlanta Falcons in 2024.

Then another season-ending injury followed in 2025 after signing with the Minnesota Vikings.

Two consecutive seasons cut short by knee injuries. Two teams that saw his potential and brought him aboard, only to lose him before the year was through.

For fans who followed Moore from his early days with the Cardinals through his moves to Atlanta and Minnesota, the trajectory was painful — a young player trying to get back on the field, trying to catch the next one, as Watt had once encouraged him to do.

Why the Clip Won’t Stop Going Viral

There’s a reason this footage has struck a nerve. It captures something real — a small, human exchange between two teammates that, in hindsight, feels impossibly tender.

When the clip first aired and when NFL on Fox first shared it, it was a charming behind-the-scenes moment: a veteran ribbing a young guy before building him up. Now, viewed through the lens of Moore’s passing at just 25 years old, the scene takes on an entirely different emotional register.

Watt’s encouragement, Moore’s visible frustration with himself, the sincerity of the whole exchange — all of it hits differently when you know how the story ends.

Most of these moments between teammates — in practice huddles, in hallway conversations, in the quiet spaces between the roar of Sundays — are never caught on camera. This one was.

And for fans mourning a young player taken far too soon, it’s a bittersweet reminder of who Rondale Moore was inside the walls of a locker room, and the teammate who took the time to lift him up.
