Attack Details and Military Response

According to Nigerien defense officials, assailants on motorcycles targeted Diori Hamani International Airpo – which also hosts Air Base 101 – in a 30-minute assault before security forces repelled the attackers. Military authorities repoed 20 militants killed and 11 detained during the operation, with four Nigerien soldiers sustaining injuries.

Officials confirmed damage to military infrastructure and civilian aircraft parked on the tarmac. Normal operations resumed at the facility by early Thursday morning following security sweeps.

Political Tensions Escalate

The attack occurred amid heightened regional tensions. Niger’s transitional leader Abdourahamane Tchiani recently accused French President Emmanuel Macron and the leaders of Benin and Ivory Coast of sponsoring “mercenaries” operating in the region, vowing retaliatory measures.

Benin’s government spokesperson Wilfried Leandre Houngbedji dismissed the allegations, stating: “Even in Niger, people don’t believe it,” characterizing the claims as baseless.

IS Claims and Regional Context

Intelligence monitoring groups confirmed Islamic State released a statement claiming responsibility for the airpo assault, though no operational details were provided. The terrorist organization asseed their operation caused “significant damage” through Amaq News Agency, its propaganda channel.

Niger joins neighboring Mali and Burkina Faso in facing persistent extremist violence linked to al-Qaeda and Islamic State affiliates. The three nations have expelled French counteerrorism forces in recent years, forming the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) to address security challenges through new international panerships, including with Russia.

Security analysts note the airpo attack underscores the ongoing instability in West Africa’s Sahel region, where jihadist groups continue targeting civilian and military infrastructure despite regional cooperation effos.
