HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) delivers an urgent advisory to UK workers receiving pay through umbrella companies. A recent post on social media platform X states: “If you’re paid through an umbrella company, look twice and stay alert to the signs of tax avoidance. Don’t get caught out.”

What Are Umbrella Companies?

Umbrella companies serve as third-party temporary employers for contractors. They manage payroll, taxes, and HR administration, commonly employed by recruitment agencies to compensate temporary staff.

Spotting Potential Tax Risks

Contractors should verify their employment setup, as some umbrella companies breach tax regulations, exposing workers to liability. GOV.UK recommends checking payslips and contracts to confirm proper Income Tax and National Insurance deductions. “Understanding how you’re being paid is the best way to make sure you aren’t using an umbrella company that is operating a tax avoidance scheme,” GOV.UK explains. “Checking your payslips and contractual arrangements will help you confirm you are paying the right amount of Income Tax and National Insurance.”

Government Tools for Verification

Workers utilize the government’s online umbrella company calculator to determine expected take-home pay. They also review the official list of identified tax avoidance schemes.

Steps to Take If Affected

Suspected involvement in a tax avoidance scheme requires immediate contact with HMRC. GOV.UK pledges assistance: “We’ll support you. We can help you get out of the scheme and settle your tax affairs. Ignoring the problem is not the answer. The longer you leave it the bigger the tax bill. Our aim is to get you back on the right track. No judgement. Simply offer you the support you need. And if you can’t afford to pay everything in one go, we may be able to offer you an instalment arrangement.”

Report schemes anonymously via the online form or phone HMRC at 0800 788 887. Callers outside the UK dial +44 (0)203 0800 871.
