The historic Tower of London, known for centuries of intrigue and conflict, now serves as the backdrop for a modern epic. Production crews capture intense scenes from the rebooted Highlander franchise, where immortal warriors clash across time, facing defeat only through decapitation in a battle for ultimate survival.
Filming Underway at Iconic Site
Shooting for the Highlander reboot commenced, drawing excitement from fans of the 1986 original. Cameras rolled recently near the Tower of London, offering a first look at the action. Henry Cavill, recognized for roles in The Witcher and as Superman, appears rugged in a leather duster coat, echoing the style of Christopher Lambert’s character from the classic film. Cavill engages in conversation with co-star Jeremy Irons, who sports a dark trench coat and a Van Dyke beard.
Action sequences promise high stakes, with Cavill—or his stunt double—captured tumbling from a motorbike. Secured by a safety rope hidden under his coat, the performer slides beneath an SUV’s wheels, hinting at the film’s thrilling choreography.
Plot and Returning Elements
The story centers on Connor MacLeod, a 16th-century Scottish Highlander who learns of his immortality. Guided by the swordsman Ramirez, portrayed by Russell Crowe in this version, MacLeod confronts other immortals through the ages. The iconic tagline, ‘There can be only one,’ underscores the ruthless competition: the final victor absorbs the knowledge and power of the defeated via the ‘Quickening’ process.
Cast, Crew, and Production Notes
Chad Stahelski directs, bringing expertise from the John Wick series, where his martial arts and stunt background shone. He previously doubled for Keanu Reeves in The Matrix films. Principal photography began on January 28 in Scotland, delayed months after Cavill sustained a rehearsal injury.
Joining Cavill and Crowe are co-stars including Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Marisa Abela, Jeremy Irons, Djimon Hounsou, Max Zhang, Drew McIntyre, Siobhán Cullen, Jun Jong-seo, Nassim Lyes, and Kevin McKidd. Michael Finch penned the script, with Dan Laustsen handling cinematography. Tyler Bates composes the score, incorporating elements from Queen’s original soundtrack.
Amazon MGM Studios plans a 2027 release, setting the stage for a fresh take on the enduring legend.
