Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur declares that the team will not back additional modifications to the Formula 1 start procedure this season. This stance comes despite Mercedes driver George Russell indirectly labeling Ferrari as “selfish” for resisting proposed rule tweaks.
Challenges with Current Start Procedures
New engines powering F1 cars in 2026 demand extra time to rev up, prompting teams to adopt a longer starting sequence with blue warning lights before the traditional five red lights. However, safety issues persist at race starts, as every 2026 event features uneven launches where quicker cars force others to swerve.
The Australian Grand Prix opener highlighted the risks, with Franco Colapinto executing remarkable reflexes to avoid colliding with Liam Lawson’s rear. Ferrari consistently excels in rapid getaways, fueling speculation that the team opposes further changes to maintain this edge.
Vasseur Addresses the Criticism
Speaking after the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, Russell implied Ferrari prioritizes self-interest by slowing progress on refinements. Vasseur counters that sufficient adjustments already occurred.
“I think that we already massively changed the rules of the start with the five-second sequence,” Vasseur stated. “One year ago, I went to the FIA, raised my hand on the starting procedure. I said, ‘Guys, it will be difficult’. The reply was clear: that you have to design the car to fit with the regulations, not change the regulations to fit with the car. We designed the car to fit the regulations. The change with the five-second blue light sequence didn’t help us at all. But at some stage, enough is enough.”
Performance Implications on Track
Ferrari’s strong launches prove advantageous, enabling Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton to challenge for the lead despite Mercedes securing pole positions in Australia and China. Yet Mercedes holds superior race pace, with George Russell and Kimi Antonelli finishing ahead of the Ferraris in both events. Leclerc and Hamilton each claim a podium finish so far this season.
