Federal immigration brokers launch crackdown in Charlotte, DHS declares

Federal immigration brokers on Saturday started operations in Charlotte, North Carolina, the most recent goal of President Trump’s widening crackdown on unlawful immigration, the Division of Homeland Safety introduced.

DHS stated it formally launched an operation dubbed “Charlotte’s Internet” to focus on immigrants dwelling within the Charlotte space illegally. CBS Information first reported final week that the Trump administration was making ready to deploy groups of Border Patrol brokers to Charlotte, together with outspoken Commander Gregory Bovino, who had led a weekslong, controversial crackdown within the Chicago space. 

“We’re surging DHS regulation enforcement to Charlotte to make sure Individuals are protected and public security threats are eliminated,” DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin stated in an announcement. “There have been too many victims of legal unlawful aliens.”

Movies posted on social media on Saturday appeared to depict green-uniformed Border Patrol brokers finishing up arrests within the Charlotte area. A Homeland Safety official instructed CBS Information that federal immigration brokers carried out almost 100 arrests within the Charlotte space on Saturday. That quantity contains immigration arrests by each Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Scores of Border Patrol brokers are anticipated to take part within the Charlotte operation, which may contain armored autos and particular operations groups, in keeping with inside authorities paperwork obtained by CBS Information.

The Trump administration’s effort has already garnered sturdy criticism from Democratic officers in North Carolina, together with Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles, who stated in an announcement alongside different native leaders that the operation was “inflicting pointless worry and uncertainty.”

After the operation in Charlotte, Border Patrol’s focus is predicted to shift to New Orleans, the place officers are planning to ship as many as 200 brokers to launch an operation dubbed the “Catahoula Crunch,” CBS Information reported Friday.
