Conservatives call on Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s government to stand with the United States should war erupt in the Middle East, amid mounting speculation about a significant strike on Iran.
Sir Keir withholds approval for US forces to access British air bases in potential operations against Iran. Conservative leaders affirm their support for steps to halt Iran’s nuclear weapons development.
Strategic UK Bases in Focus
US military planners eye RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire and Diego Garcia for launches in any assault on Iran. Regime-aligned security forces in Iran have killed more than 36,000 protesters in recent weeks.
The Prime Minister’s position reportedly fuels Donald Trump’s criticism of the UK’s transfer of the Chagos Islands, including Diego Garcia, to Mauritius.
James Cartlidge, Conservative Shadow Defence Secretary, declared: “Iran’s nuclear programme poses a grave threat to Britain and our allies. Conservatives backed US strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities last summer for this reason. Iran must never acquire a nuclear bomb.
“Though hypothetical, should the US deem further action necessary against this threat—and if it aligns with UK national interests and security—we should allow access to our bases, including RAF sites in the UK and Diego Garcia.”
UK officials hesitate to grant base access over concerns that strikes on Iran breach international law. US moves target intelligence suggesting Iran’s push toward nuclear arms.
Trump Issues Ultimatum to Iran
Donald Trump warns Iran’s leadership of dire consequences for protester deaths. During the debut session of his new Board of Peace in Washington, he demanded a nuclear agreement within 10 days.
Trump stated: “We may have to take it a step further, or we may not. Maybe we’re going to make a deal … you’re going to be finding out over the next probably 10 days.”
In a social media post, he referenced UK facilities: “Should Iran refuse a deal, the United States may need to use Diego Garcia and the Fairford airfield to neutralize threats from this unstable regime—attacks that could target the UK and allies.”
He continued: “We stand ready to defend the UK, but they must confront wokeism and other challenges head-on.”
The US ramps up Middle East deployments, including aircraft carriers, fighter jets, submarines, and support units.
