Parents in Conception Bay North express joy over the province’s commitment to rebuild Cabot Academy, destroyed in a massive wildfire last summer.
Community Celebrates Long-Awaited News
Susan Traverse-Delaney, a parent at Cabot Academy, shares the widespread excitement. “We’re elated, the whole shore,” she said. “It’s just a good day for the North Shore.”
The wildfire struck on August 15, ravaging the Kingston area and destroying about 200 structures, including the school that served around 60 students. Students now attend nearby schools such as Carbonear Academy and Persalvic Elementary.
Province Addresses Rebuild Details
Education Minister Paul Dinn confirms the province’s full intention to replace the school. “We’re not abandoning Conception Bay North residents, in no way, when it comes to the school,” Dinn stated.
Planning involves evaluating the school’s size, catchment areas, and enrollment figures to ensure the best outcome.
Parents Push for Restoration
Traverse-Delaney has led efforts to petition for the rebuild since the fire. The school held deep community significance and personal value for her. “When I found out that we lost the school in August, I feel like a piece of me just was lost,” she explained.
She notes challenges for students post-fire. “We’re finding that the children are suffering. Every day my child cries,” Traverse-Delaney said.
In January, she met with Carbonear-Trinity-Bay de Verde MHA Riley Balsom, who pledged to advocate for the rebuild. This spurred community petitions.
The resolve remains strong. “As a community from the North Shore, we are going to rebuild stronger,” Traverse-Delaney affirmed.
Her daughter reacted with pure delight to Friday’s announcement. “I told her and she skipped the whole way to the car. She’s telling all her friends,” she shared.
