Bob Weir, a founding member of the legendary rock band the Grateful Lifeless, has died on the age of 78, his household introduced Saturday.
“It’s with profound disappointment that we share the passing of Bobby Weir,” his household wrote in a put up to his Instagram web page. “He transitioned peacefully, surrounded by family members, after courageously beating most cancers as solely Bobby might. Sadly, he succumbed to underlying lung points.”
Within the assertion, the household disclosed that Weir had been recognized with most cancers in July.
“As we bear in mind Bobby, it is exhausting to not really feel the echo of the best way he lived,” his household wrote. “A person driftin’ and dreamin’, by no means worrying if the highway would lead him house. A toddler of numerous timber. A toddler of boundless seas.”

Weir fashioned the Grateful Lifeless with Jerry Garcia after the 2 met in 1963 as teenagers in Palo Alto, California. The band, with its distinctive mixture of blues, folks and jazz, turned a touring powerhouse for many years till Garcia’s demise in 1995.
Weir wrote or co-wrote and sang lead vocals on Lifeless classics together with “Sugar Magnolia,” “One Extra Saturday Night time” and “Mexicali Blues.”
The group finally reformed a number of years after Garcia’s demise and took many iterations over time, the most recent as Lifeless & Firm.

“For over sixty years, Bobby took to the highway,” his household’s assertion stated. “A guitarist, vocalist, storyteller, and founding member of the Grateful Lifeless. Bobby will perpetually be a guiding power whose distinctive artistry reshaped American music. His work did greater than fill rooms with music; it was heat daylight that stuffed the soul, constructing a neighborhood, a language, and a sense of household that generations of followers carry with them.”
Weir’s demise leaves drummer Invoice Kreutzmann as the one surviving authentic member. Founding bassist Phil Lesh died in 2024.
Lifeless and Firm performed a sequence of live performance’s for the Grateful Lifeless’s sixtieth anniversary in July at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.
