The BMW iX3 stands as a key launch in BMW’s Neue Klasse lineup, potentially one of the year’s most notable electric vehicles. At the recent UK unveiling, I tested the model firsthand, shortly after it earned Car of the Year honors from Top Gear magazine. After a full day behind the wheel, the reasons for its acclaim became clear: innovative features and driver aids that enhance without overwhelming.

Top-Spec Model Details

I drove the BMW iX3 xDrive M Sport Pro, a high-end four-wheel-drive variant priced just over £72,000. It delivers 463 horsepower, weighs 2.3 tonnes unladen, and offers a WLTP range of 451.2 miles (722 km). Beyond specs, three standout elements impressed me, leading to a key insight on modern EVs.

Refined Design Evolution

BMW addresses past criticism of oversized kidney grilles with a sleeker, smaller front on the iX3, echoing the original 1960s Neue Klasse designs. Photos suggested a stocky look, but in person, the longer body and lower front profile convey refinement. Despite its hefty weight, physics-defying handling shines through precise feedback via seats, steering, and pedals—much like rival Audi models.

Intelligent Regenerative Braking

The iX3’s regenerative braking integrates with the satnav for predictive deceleration. Enter a destination, and the system anticipates needs based on upcoming turns: lighter braking for a 18 mph roundabout approach versus heavier for a 50 mph country bend. It won’t stop the car fully, so the brake pedal remains essential, but the intuition is seamless. Disabling it seems unnecessary given its effectiveness.

Minimalist Yet Functional Interior

No traditional instrument cluster greets the driver; instead, a large touchscreen dominates, paired with a slim screen below the windscreen. This setup keeps eyes on the road for speed, navigation, and media info without glances away.

Comparison to My Daily Driver

My own BMW MINI Clubman Cooper S—a 189 bhp, four-wheel-drive estate from the 2010s weighing 1.5 tonnes—felt nimbler and simpler upon return. No mode tweaks or aid disables needed; just drive. This highlights the MINI’s enduring dynamics. While an uneven matchup, it underscores how older cars demanded less intervention, letting drivers focus. Modern aids like parking sensors, blind-spot monitors, and predictive nav boost safety and prep—vital progress.

Verdict: A Strong Contender

The iX3 earns its accolades with safety innovations and driving aids that prepare drivers effectively. If the full Neue Klasse range matches this, electric motoring promises sustained pleasure. My score: 9/10.
