Greggs dominates the British snack scene with sausage rolls and doughnuts, but Bakery79 emerges as a formidable challenger in the food-to-go market.
Rapid Expansion Across the UK
This emerging chain launched in the UK in early 2025 and now operates around 80 stores, primarily in southern England. Locations also appear in northern areas like Newcastle, Durham, and Aberdeenshire in Scotland.
In March 2025, Bakery79 opened 12 sites at Park Garage Group forecourts, repurposing former Greggs concessions. The company added another 12 stores earlier this year and plans to launch 20 fully-fledged outlets plus 10 self-service locations by the end of 2026.
Diverse Menu of Fresh Bites
Bakery79 serves breakfast classics such as bacon baps, sausage baps, breakfast pots, potato poppers, and baguettes. Lunch options include pizzas, halloumi bites, chicken bites, sandwiches, and sausage rolls. Sweet treats feature cookies, doughnuts, and more, paired with a selection of coffees.
A staff member claims the breakfast bowl outperforms competitors. Another employee, Jackie, highlights the pastries: “In other stores you usually get a lot of pastry and not much inside, but these are full, especially the ones with beans. The sausage rolls are really nice too.”
Mother’s Day Promotion for Single Mums
Ahead of expansion, Bakery79 offers free Yum Yums to single mums this Mother’s Day on March 15. A spokesperson explained: “The giveaway recognizes single mums who often juggle childcare, work, and responsibilities without being treated themselves.”
Redeem by saying “Yum Yums for Single Mums” at the counter between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Positive Customer Feedback
Stores foster a community atmosphere, earning praise from regulars. Emily K reviewed: “The community vibe at Bakery79 makes it special, and the baked goods are to die for!” Mike C added: “Always fresh, always tasty – Bakery79 is my go-to for a quick bite and great coffee!”
Social Media Buzz and Value Deals
TikTok users rave about the offerings. Food creator @Liam_Lav discovered Bakery79 in Ashington, Northumberland, and declared the pizza “unreal” with lush displays of hot food.
Pizza slices cost £2.79, slightly above Greggs’ £2.75 pepperoni at £2.75, but new flavors like Meat Feast draw crowds. @jadamson98official calls Bakery79 her favorite for Too Good To Go bags at £2.95, packed with sandwiches, baguettes, doughnuts, cookies, and flatbread bowls: “The food is stunning, and the amount of food for £2.95 a bag is unreal!”
