Apple’s support for the legacy Home architecture ends today, February 10, 2026. Users still on the older system risk losing access to their Home app, smart accessories, and automations if they fail to migrate promptly.

Background on the Architecture Shift

Apple introduced the new Home architecture in October 2022 alongside iOS 16.2, enhancing reliability and enabling Matter standard compatibility. The company initially made the upgrade optional, requiring compatible devices on iOS 16.2 or later.

In May 2025, Apple announced iOS 19 as the final version supporting the legacy setup, with an original cutoff in fall 2025. Officials later extended the deadline to February 10, 2026, providing additional time for transitions.

Recent Warnings from Apple

Over recent weeks, Apple has emailed affected users, urging updates to prevent disruptions in critical alerts and features like AirPlay on accessories. The company emphasizes improved performance, guest access, robot vacuum support, and Activity History in the updated Home app.

Upgrade Requirements

Devices connected to an updated home must run iOS 16.2, iPadOS 16.2, macOS 13.1, tvOS 16.2, or watchOS 9.2 or later. Outdated devices will lose access until updated. Note that iPads no longer serve as home hubs in the new architecture.

Set up a home hub like an Apple TV or HomePod for remote control and notifications. Enable two-factor authentication on your Apple Account and iCloud Keychain.

How to Update Apple Home

Follow these steps on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac:

  1. Open the Home app.
  2. Tap or click the More button.
  3. Select Home Settings. Choose a home if you manage multiple.
  4. Tap or click Software Update.
  5. Select Update Now and follow the onscreen prompts.

All homes update simultaneously. A confirmation message states: “This home and all accessories are up to date.”

Troubleshooting Tips

If no update appears, verify two-factor authentication settings for all users. Consult Apple’s support resources for homes inaccessible post-update.

Act today to ensure seamless smart home operation and access to future enhancements.
