Tania Fernandes Anderson had the proper venue inside attain for her Boston Metropolis Council “final stand” Wednesday. She may have held courtroom within the Metropolis Corridor lavatory, the one wherein, in keeping with federal prosecutors, she was handed $7,000 money in a kickback scheme.

The theme of the gathering may have been “accountability,” one thing that was starkly lacking from the Council assembly in chambers.

If anybody in attendance on the assembly didn’t know of the corruption and theft case towards Fernandes Anderson, they’d have assumed that the District 7 councilor was using off in a blaze of glory. Fernandes Anderson offered a final hurrah laundry checklist of points she tackled for her constituents.

All of whom she let down when she finagled the funds to return out $7,000 richer.

However the elephant within the room was by no means acknowledged, not by Fernandes Anderson, not by anybody. Ignoring the explanation Fernandes Anderson received’t be again to affix her former colleagues made for some moments of head-smacking irony and sheer gall.

“I got here into this world the identical manner I depart it, in service, within the spirit of accountability, within the title of dignity, and at all times, at all times within the perception that actual energy rests with the folks,” Fernandes Anderson mentioned in her farewell speech. “To my constituents in District 7, thanks. … You’re the purpose I fought.”

The spirit of what?

She continued: “As a result of, let’s be sincere, the system is ready as much as accommodate politeness, not fact. It tolerates efficiency, not integrity, and anybody who dares to step outdoors of that theater dangers being ostracized or worse.”

The system does greater than tolerate integrity; it’s why Fernandes Anderson was arrested and faces jail when she’s sentenced on July 29.

On the very least, Fernandes Anderson owes an apology to her constituents and to her fellow councilors. That act would come from a spot of integrity.

The councilor is hardly an outlier amongst Massachusetts politicians in stepping over the crime line.

When disgraced former Speaker of the Home Sal DiMasi pleaded for leniency earlier than a choose in 2011 forward of sentencing, he mentioned “I’ve introduced dishonor to the workplace I held — a ache I’ll by no means be capable of soothe.” DiMasi was convicted of pocketing $65,000 in bribes.

Former Speaker of the Home Tom Finneran was sentenced in federal courtroom in 2007 after being convicted of obstructing justice for offering deceptive testimony. Not a proud second, however at the very least he acknowledged it: “I shamed myself. I shamed my household. I apologize to my constituents. I apologize to the folks of Massachusetts.”

District 7 deserves an apology.

So does the Metropolis Council, although a few of her colleagues have been firmly on Group Ignore the Apparent.

Councilor Liz Breadon took the ground. “I simply wish to acknowledge the contribution and the instance in lots of ways in which  Fernandes Anderson has made to us.”

She’s been an instance, definitely, of what occurs when a public servant traces their pockets in a shady deal. Corruption shouldn’t be glossed over. That, too, is an insult to voters.

District 7 will get a brand new councilor, hopefully somebody who understands the wants and considerations of constituents and fights the nice battle for them. One who understands that the energy of 1’s convictions doesn’t consult with a pending federal sentence.
