The mayor of an Inland Empire metropolis is urging residents to remain indoors and be cautious of individuals they have no idea amid ongoing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations within the space.

“Keep house and don’t open the door to strangers,” Perris Mayor Michael Vargas mentioned throughout a video message on Instagram.

Town posted the video in Spanish and English Wednesday after receiving experiences of ICE operations within the space.

“We urge all residents to stay calm, keep indoors when attainable and know your rights,” Vargas mentioned. “Don’t exit except obligatory.”

Roughly 78% of the Riverside County metropolis’s 83,000 residents are Hispanic or Latino, in keeping with the U.S. Census Bureau.

“This message is for consciousness and security,” Vargas mentioned. “Town is dedicated to defending the dignity and well-being of all our residents.”

In an announcement to The Occasions on Friday, Vargas mentioned, “It’s unlucky to see masked brokers arresting people inside our neighborhood.

“Nonetheless, the Metropolis of Perris doesn’t have the authorized jurisdiction to intervene with federal immigration officers throughout their investigations and as such we wouldn’t have the power to do a lot past encouraging residents to analysis and to know their authorized rights,” he mentioned.

For greater than a month, a heightened sense of worry has rippled by way of the immigrant neighborhood in Southern California because the Trump administration has intensified its immigration enforcement efforts, together with arresting U.S. residents and a whole lot of undocumented immigrants with none prison document.

Immigration brokers have focused automotive washes, procuring facilities, swap meets and different companies — pushing immigrant neighborhood members underground and leaving many usually energetic areas abandoned.

Vargas’ message was launched a day after Bishop Alberto Rojas of the Diocese of San Bernardino advised his roughly 1 million parishioners that they might keep house on Sundays to keep away from Mass given issues surrounding the continued federal immigration raids.

Rojas’ steerage included encouraging members to “keep their religious communion” by praying the rosary or studying scripture.
